HSF Executive/Senior Management Leadership Retreat

Exclusively for executive directors and senior managers of nonprofit and public organizations

Managing Ideas, Creativity, and Innovation

A vital core competency for any leader is the ability to create an organization that continuously improves and innovates at a rapid rate. Whatever goals your organization needs to meet in order to accomplish its mission, you need your people’s ideas to attain these goals.

Idea-driven organizations are directed from the top, but are driven by large numbers of ideas from the bottom. The first part of the retreat will introduce leaders to global state-of-the-art practices in managing ideas. The best organizations in the world now routinely get and use 50 or more ideas per person per year, with implementation rates of 90 percent or higher. Not surprisingly, they perform at extraordinary levels. Data from organizations with high-performing idea systems show that roughly 80 percent of overall performance improvement comes from front-line ideas, and only 20 percent from management-initiated projects. It is impossible to be excellent in any aspect of performance without the ability to tap front-line ideas.

Once we have covered how the best leaders and organizations encourage and implement large numbers of ideas, the session will turn to how to increase the impact, creativity and innovativeness of the ideas that come in. It will cover the six elements of corporate creativity and how to implement them.

Leaders will walk away with a roadmap for turning creativity in their organizations from a sporadic hit-or-miss proposition into something consistent they can truly count on.
