Solving Ethical Dilemmas in Counseling

Wednesday April 5, and Thursday April 6, 2023
9 am to 12 pm (NOON) each day
Virtual Workshop (via zoom)
This program will identify and discuss a number of common ethical dilemmas that are faced by mental health counselors in Texas: recognizing and dealing with difficult clients; recognizing possible boundary issues to avoid professional boundary violations; understanding state and federal laws that govern how confidential information and records must be maintained, used and disclosed; retiring from practice or winding down/leaving a mental health practice; mandatory reporting of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of clients; handling requests for records from clients and parents; dealing with subpoenas issued in civil and criminal litigation; testifying in court or in a deposition; dealing with difficult dynamics between supervisors and supervisees; how to adequately document mental health treatment.
Finally, this program will review the process for dealing with a licensing board complaint in Texas and provide practical strategies for protecting a professional's license and livelihood.
Attendees will gain an understanding of the laws and regulations that govern their practice, an understanding of common mistakes and specific strategies for managing the risk of a mental health practice.
About the Speaker
Kenda Dalrymple is the Managing Partner of Dalyrymple, Shellhorse, Ellis & Diamond, LLP - one of the oldest and largest woman-owned law firms in Austin, Texas. She earned her B.A. in Communications from Baylor University and her law degree from Baylor University School of Law. She practices in the areas of administrative and health law, with an emphasis on representing licensed professionals before their licensing boards and advising them on matters related to their practices. She is married to her college sweetheart, Bill Dalrymple, and they live in Cedar Park with too many elderly dogs.
