Former journalist Joel Stratte-McClure lives in Redding but regularly travels to the Mediterranean. Twenty years ago, at age 50, he decided to walk around the Mediterranean Sea and explore the coast, countryside and regional cultures, as well as his own mind, with a copy of Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey. There, walking over 12,600 miles, he not only discovered a rich history but also gained new insights related to walking, hoboism, health, and alcoholism; as well as Buddhism and food, culture, mythology, and myriad other subjects. He has written a trilogy of books about these adventures.

Stratte-McClure has been writing about his global trekking and hiking adventures since the 1970s. His articles have appeared in such places asTime magazine, The London Times, People Magazine. Joel’s family moved to Redding in 1954 and he went to Bonny View, Sequoia and Shasta High before attending Stanford University and the Columbia School of Journalism. He returned to Redding in 2009 to tell jokes to his aging mother who will be 100 years old in October — and plans to attend the March 2 event. Nancy Wiegman is the long-time host of “Nancy’s Bookshelf” of North State Public Radio (WEDNESDAY AT 10 A.M. AND SUNAYS AT 8 P.M.). Each week host Wiegman talks to local, regional and national writers about their latest projects. Nancy had a master's degree in French linguistics from Indiana University and taught yoga and foreign languages at CSU Fresno and the College of Charleston before moving to Chico in 1990. She became a classical announcer at KCHO in 1990 and often hosted the hourlong call-in show "I-5 LIVE!" on North State Public Radio, occasionally Weekend Showcase, and started Nancy's Bookshelf in July of 2007 after producing a series of four-minutes spots called "Health Desk," which aired during All Things Considered. Nancy is also a certified pilgrim, having walked sections of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain and France many times beginning in 2005.

North State Public Radio: More than four months after being destroyed by the deadly Carr Fire, 88.9FM KFPR in Redding is back on the air. North State Public Radio’s Redding transmitter went off the air on July 27, when the wildfire burned the site on Shasta Bally Mountain where KFRP and other radio stations were housed. Translators in Burney, 91.9FM, and Dunsmuir, 92.3FM, who get their signal from the Redding tower are also now back on the air. Broadcasting news, music and entertainment from NPR and local hosts, North State Public Radio’s main transmitter in Chico was also damaged last summer and was operating on reduced power for several months. NSPR General Manager Phil Wilke said. “I want to thank our listeners in the Redding area for the patience and support. We want to let them know we’re back, and that we are ready to earn their time and support.” NSPR plans on doing some events in Redding as a thank-you to the community, he said. NSPR can be heard across Northern California on the following frequencies: KCHO 91.7 FM Chico, KFPR 88.9 FM Redding, 91.9 FM Burney, 89.7 FM Chester, 92.3 FM Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta, 100.9 FM Greenville, 99.7 FM Hayfork, 92.3 FM Oroville, 89.5 FM Weaverville and 98.3 FM Westwood. The Shasta Library Foundation provides critical support to the Shasta Public Library, resulting in free programs, resources, and services available to adults, children, and youth in Shasta County.
