Nonprofit Finance for Non-Finance People: Extended Edition

*One of our most requested annual workshops is being offered in an expanded format this year.  Join Julia Kyser as she covers the basics of nonprofit finance with additional time to delve deeper in to topics and allow for more audience participation*  

Many nonprofit executives and board members rise through the ranks from direct service providers or other outside industries and have little or no financial or accounting training and are now expected to prepare, manage or review financial statements, budgets and grant reports.  Even those coming from business management typically do not have training in the unique aspects of nonprofit financials and accounting. 

This workshop covers the basics of nonprofit finances, including the following:

  • What it means to be a nonprofit including formation and tax filing responsibilities
  • General accounting policies and terms such as basis of accounting, types of financial statements and financial categories
  • Reading nonprofit financial statements
  • Nonprofit accounting rules including determining if a contribution or not, and contribution types such as unrestricted, restricted, conditional, pledges, and in-kind
  • Basics of budget preparation with sample worksheets
  • Importance of internal controls
  • Need for policies and procedures manuals

 

Early Bird Nonprofit Rate (through April. 16, 2019): $35
Nonprofit Rate (after April. 16, 2019): $45
Market Rate (applies to for-profit agencies): $250 per person

Cancellation Policy

Participants who register for the workshop and do not attend or offer a replacement will be charged a $150 cancellation fee. Participants who cancel their registration on or before 5PM ET on Tuesday April. 23, 2019 will have the fee waived. The Presenter – Julia Kyser

Julia Kyser has her own CPA practice performing accounting and consulting services for not-for-profit organizations.  She serves as the contract accountant/CFO for approximately 25 organizations performing services ranging from annual to biweekly assistance. Her duties vary by client but include bookkeeping, recording journal entries for items such as payroll and accrual adjustments, month end reconciliation and closing procedures, financial reporting, grant reporting, audit preparation, budgeting, drafting policies and evaluating internal controls, and communicating with management and board of directors. Prior to this venture, Julia spent 13 years in public accounting, specializing in the nonprofit area. She earned a B.S. in Accountancy from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
