Discussions across Difference - Nov. 8, 2019 

As a follow up to the November 7th Civil Disagreement event with Doris Meissner and Reihan Salam on the highly-charged subject of immigration, we will hold a lunchtime discussion for undergraduates, called “Discussions across Difference.” This conversation, which is co-sponsored by the Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics and the Office ofthe President, will offer undergraduate participants the opportunity to continue the conversation from the prior evening and debrief together in a moderated group. Students will be divided into small groups of 10-15 participants, with two trained student moderators to guide the conversation. A light lunch will be served.

The Civil Disagreement Series is a new initiative of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, with generous support from the Office of the President. These moderated conversations will bring together policy and subject experts from different political viewpoints to discuss a current-events topic. Our goal is to hold conversations that people may feel they can’t otherwise have, and model thoughtful, reflective engagement on hard issues through which we can learn about one another’s views. The Civil Disagreement talks will also exhibit to the public beyond the campus that the university supports productive conversations on fraught subjects that involve a wide diversity of viewpoints. 

The first public event of this series will be a discussion on immigration with Doris Meissner, Senior Fellow and Director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute, and Reihan Salam, Executive Director of National Review and President of the Manhattan Institute. This conversation will be moderated by Danielle Allen. 

Students who register for Discussions across Difference are also expected to attend the public moderated conversation on November 7th.
