Cities are now home to a majority of the world’s population and are on the front line in the battle against climate change. While action at the federal and intergovernmental levels has been painfully slow, cities in the around the globe are starting to lead by example at a local level. Cities must take an active role in helping their constituents (starting with themselves of course) to mitigate their impact on climate change as well as begin investing in appropriate climate change adaptation solutions.
Hunter Lovins (Time Magazine Hero of the Planet and co-author of Natural Capitalism) and Boyd Cohen, Ph.D. (Professor of Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Co-founder, CO2 IMPACT) recently published the sequel to Natural Capitalism, entitled Climate Capitalism which shows how communities, cities, countries and companies are already profiting from the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Vancouver's Mayor, Gregor Robertson commented: “With a massive shift in the global economy toward sustainable business, new markets are emerging and cities are poised to capitalize. Climate Capitalism demonstrates how cities can succeed in the global green economy by taking advantage of the growing demand for clean, green innovation. To build a future that values people and the planet, we need to rethink how we do business—and Climate Capitalism shows how to do it.”
Gleaning insights from his research for Climate Capitalism, Dr. Cohen just released (June 28th) his first ever rankings of Globally Resilient Cities. In this webinar, Boyd Cohen will share best practices in climate change mitigation and adaption in cities and interact with participants to discuss the rankings. We are pleased to announce that David Cadman, President of ICLEI, will be a guest speaker during the webinar and will discuss what ICLEI is doing to promote resilient cities around the globe.
