Offering fifteen (15) OD continuing education hours and six (6) paraoptometric education hours, IOA's Annual Convention will be held April 21-23, 2017, at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel at Keystone Crossing. All fifteen hours qualify for Indiana Optometry Board (IOB) credit and ten hours qualify for the Legend Drug certification.  All OD hours are COPE-qualifed.

Prescribing for a Preverbal Pediatric Population

You will learn prescribing options for infants and toddlers through a systematic analysis and case examples of hyperopic, myopic, and astigmatic refractive errors. Prevention and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia in regard to proper refractive correction will be stressed. You will be presented with both the science and art of optometric prescribing for young patients. Multiple methods of treatment including spectacle, contact lens, and occlusion will be reviewed.

Prescription Formulas for the Pediatric Patient

This course will review the most commonly available ocular medications in the pediatric population. Diagnostic, antibiotic, and allergy agents will be presented with the age approvals, proper dosage, and side effects of each discussed. The presentation will conclude with the anterior and posterior segment pathology frequently diagnosed in the pediatric population and proper treatment and follow-up care for each.

Today’s world presents a variety of challenges in regard to vision usage. You will learn the effect of today’s exponential use of media on children in regard to vision and academics. Common visual symptoms and the diagnosis and treatment of the accommodative and binocular vision issues that cause them will be reviewed. The information shared will aim at allowing practitioners to give the proper treatment to patients and the proper advice to parents who ask about the effect of the digital age on our vision.

Fitting Children with Contact Lenses

This course will give the reasons for fitting myopic children with contact lenses, describe ways to interest children and parents in contact lens wear, provide tips for making it easier for children, include evidence of the benefits of contact lens wear for children, and discuss risks associated with contact lens wear. At the end of the class, eye doctors should be comfortable talking to parents about contact lenses for their children.

Some of these drugs have the potential to produce devastating loss of vision or ocular side-effects that can lead to loss of visual function. This lecture will discuss the most important of these drugs and what the clinician needs to know to prevent these visually dangerous side-effects.

POAG is a major cause of blindness. Its proper management requires a thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease and the pharmacology of the drugs used to treat this condition. These issues will be covered in this evidence-based presentation.
