Conference: Forced Marriage in the United States

Luncheon: 20th Anniversary Coalition Celebration

Join us in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Oneida County Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition.

20th Anniversary Celebration Luncheon:
Our 20th Anniversary luncheon celebrates and recognizes the contribution of past and present leaders of the Oneida County Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition.

Conference:  Forced Marriage In the United States

In recognizing our leaders we also recognize the cultural diversity which defines Oneida County and the importance of serving our community in a culturally and lingustically appropriate manner.

We seek to raise awareness of the possibility of forced marriage in our community: dynamics, indentifying, supporting survivors & addressing, and exploring collaborative community responses.

  • Oneida County has welcomed over 13,000 refugees from over 31 different countries and Utica is home to a 15-18% refugee derived population.  Many of these cultures have traditional practices involving the practice of arranged marriages.
  • An arranged marriage is distinguished by both parties freely consenting to the marriage.
  • Youth and adults raised in the United States face pressure to follow traditional ways while taking on American culture which can create an environment not conducive to free consent.
  • A forced marriage is a marriage that is performed without the consent of one or both parties which likely includes coercion and/or pressure to marry in the form of emotional blackmail and/or threats or actual physical violence.
  • 2011 Tahirih Justice Center National Survey Identified as many as 3000 cases within the past two years.

Our conference is being lead by national experts on Forced Marriage in the United States.
