Rain Harvesting and Graywater For Your Landscape - Water-Saving Sustainability

You are invited to a free rain harvesting and graywater workshop to promote water-saving principles in our landscapes. This workshop offers attendees the opportunity to learn how to design systems that are best suited to their lifestyle and landscape.

Scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the City of Escondido, the workshop will be taught by Candace Vanderhoff, whose current work with RainThanks includes managing, consulting and designing water harvesting systems, sustainable landscapes and water conservation products. Candace has a master’s degree in architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, is certified as a LEED accredited professional by the US Green Building Council, and is a certified Permaculture designer.

Topics covered will include:

How water currently cycles in and out of our community.
Available water sources and challenges.
How much water we use Per Person/Per Day.
Amount used for irrigation – How to reduce outdoor potable water use.

Part 2 – Considerations when Evaluating Rainwater at your Home.

Calculate rainwater harvesting potential – Roof and other surfaces.
Site evaluation – Existing space, slope, vegetation, gutters, downspouts, overflow dispersal.
Benefits to installing a system: to the homeowner, community and the environment.
Collection, conveyance, filter, storage, dispersal.

Part 3 – Rain and Graywater System Considerations

Design and installation – Why or why not to DIY.
Components you may need: resources and cost. Items to upcycle/repurpose.
Tools you may need and where to purchase.
Steps in installing a system.

Reservations must be made by Monday, February 24, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.
