Logistics is one of the most dynamic sectors of our economy. It is central to many business operations—to ship products to end-buyers, organize regular supply of raw and finished materials, and provide long-distance forwarding and dispatch services. It is local, regional, national, and international—sometimes all at the same time. But we can also look at transportation logistics in a broader sense, as moving people as well as goods safely, efficiently, and in a variety of modes and a variety of circumstances.

Join NOACA at its Annual Meeting on Friday, September 8, as we explore the theme “The Logistics of Regional Transportation.”

Keynote Address: "Taking the Politics out of Transportation"
How do you fund mega projects such as the tunnel from New Jersey to New York under the Hudson River and fix the damage to roads after a major storm such as Hurricane Irene or Super Storm Sandy? According to NOACA’s keynote speaker, Jim Simpson, the answer is to focus on making real improvements that make a difference in people’s lives, find creative solutions to operational and infrastructure challenges, spend money like it’s our own, and hold people accountable and responsible while valuing their input and leadership.

A transportation expert, Jim Simpson rose from tractor-trailer driver to president to chairman of Victory Worldwide Transportation (an international moving and storage company), and he even took time out for public service. 

• He was appointed by President George W. Bush to head the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and to the St. Lawrence Seaway Advisory Board.
• He was appointed by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Commissioner of Transportation for the State of New Jersey, where he oversaw 16,000 employees, about $5 billion in capital funds, and nearly $4 billion in operating funds.
• He was appointed by New York Governor George E. Pataki to the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and to the New York State Job Development Authority Board.
• He was the chair of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (the nine-county-two-state Greater Philadelphia MPO).
• He was appointed by New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to the New York City Work Force Investment Board.

“AIMing Forward to 2040”
In June, NOACA adopted three major planning documents: the long-range transportation plan, AIM Forward 2040; the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and the Overall Work Program (OWP). These plans have the ability to transform Northeast Ohio, as we plan and implement $13 billion in transportation investments that address accessibility, safety, and mobility for people who live and work in the region.
