Catherine Darling Hostetter is a past UWS President. She joined the Utah Watercolor Society in 1999 and credits it with her success in becoming a professional artist and for the many friendships found here.
She is an award winning artist and a Signature Member of UWS & an Intermountain Society of Artists Member of Merit. Winning a number of awards throughout the years, her most recent awards include Best of Show for "Flying With Dogs" at the Midvale City Art Show and a Juror's Award for "Sheep Selfie" at the UWS Small Works Show. Catherine is represented by Local Colors of Utah were she exhibits her whimsical expression of the world. Her art has been published in Smart Money and The Wall Street Journal Magazine.
Catherine began her path as an artist in 1st grade, when she stole clay from school (which was later confessed at a Parent/Teacher Conference). At the same conference, her teacher asked Catherine's Mother to restrict her daughter to only doing math in pencil and not in crayon. Never understanding why, Catherine's confusion of the math incidence was compounded when she found out her high school art teacher, Mr. Olsen, was the husband of her 1st grade teacher. (You would think that an artist's wife would understand!) As a sophomore, Catherine was chosen by Mr. Olsen to represent Jordan High as the Sterling Scholar in Art in her upcoming senior year. He threatened her, that all of his Sterling Scholars always made it to the top 10 finalists in the state. Ever obedient, Catherine received one of those 10 honors for art in the Utah High Schools. (Whew! No Pressure!)

Day One of the workshop, Catherine will demonstrate 2 exercises that will pull on your artistic imagination. The first morning exercise (#1) will open your eyes and get you wiggling. Then you will be set loose to indulge your own creative thoughts on WC Paper. After lunch, it will be time for the afternoon exercise (#2), where you will let your fancy take flight and you will paint a story of your own personal design.
Day Two of the workshop, we begin with a demo involving Catherine's favorite subjects, animals and people. You are invited to bring photos of your favorite subject matter and focus on adding your original inspiration to a painting of your own. Be Brave! This is the time to follow your creativity. We will end each day with a critique. Are we going to have fun? Heck YEAH!
