2017 Honorary Dean & Keynote Speaker
Monday, May 1st

Kids at Hope is honored to announce Erin Gruwell,  whose story of not giving up on kids inspired the major motion picture FREEDOM WRITERS starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, as this year's Featured Keynote Speaker and Presenter and our 2017 Honorary Dean.

The movie Freedom Writers is based on Erin's and her "at hope" students diaries, The Freedom Writers Diary, an international best seller. When Erin met the high school students who would challenge her as a first year teacher she wrote, "Ironically, "hope" is one of the few four letter words not in their vocabulary."

By fostering an educational philosophy that valued and promoted diversity, Erin Gruwell transformed her students’ lives. She encouraged them to
re-think rigid beliefs about themselves and others, reconsider their own daily decisions, and ultimately, re-chart their future. With Gruwell’s support, they chose to forego teenage pregnancy, drugs, and violence in order to become aspiring college students, published writers, and citizens for change.
