Great Books In Wine Country 2013 Sunday, October 6

You are invited to join us for Great Books in Wine Country 2013 in Calistoga for a book discussion in the morning and viewing the film made from the book in the afternoon followed by a short wine and cheese tasting.  This year's story is The Man Who Would Be King by Rudyard Kipling and we will watch the film of the same name.

Our discussion of the story will begin at 10:00 am so try to arrive by 9:30 am to get settled.  You may arrive as early as 9:00 am when we will have coffee, tea, juice, and some breakfast munchies available.  At noon you will be on your own for lunch in Calistoga which has many excellent eating places within walking distance of our meeting place.  We will show the film at 1:30 pm with a short discussion afterwards and then have a wine and cheese tasting before sending you on your way between 4:00 and 5:00 pm.

If you plan on staying overnight, accommodations can be hard to find around Calistoge at harvest time so you might consider Napa or Santa Rosa which are both less than an hour away.

Man Who Would Be KingThis story, one of Kipling’s best, describes the journey of two half-mad yet determined Englishmen from obscurity in India to divine rule in far-off Kafiristan. They smuggle themselves into Afghanistan, steal mules when their camels give out, trek over vast mountains, and one sets himself up as a god-king of the more primitive locals.  Soon, they are discovered to be only human. A great adventure story.

The movie, directed by John Huston, stars Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer, and Saeed Jaffrey.  It received Oscars for Art-Set Decoration, Costume Design, Film Editing, and Writing, Screenplay Adapted From Other Material.

The cost for this event is $30.00.  You may pay by check, your PayPal account, or credit card (Visa or Mastercard thru PayPal.)  Just click below on the “Register Now” button.

This registration is for Sunday, October 6, 2013 only.
