2023 Gold Country Mini Retreat

Presented by the Great Books Council of

San Francisco

Come to Auburn Great Books to discuss The Brothers by Stephen Kinzer and the movie The Quiet American.

Here is your chance to meet in person with fellow readers to consider Kinzer’s chronicle of global action in the 1950’s and 1960’s. John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State, and Allen Dulles, Director of the CIA served under Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and into the early days of Kennedy. The Dulles brothers are described as architects of policies leading to historic tensions around the world.

Please read and bring the The Brothers trade paperback, ISBN 978-1-250-05312 version for our discussion.

After lunch we’ll watch “The Quiet American” based on Graham Greene’s novel set in 1955 Vietnam.  Michael Caine stars in this political drama along with Brendan Fraser.

We will meet at the Pioneer United Methodist Church, 1338 Lincoln Way, Auburn.  Check-in for coffee between 9 and 9:30 on Saturday to meet fellow readers.  Our discussion begins at 10.  Lunch is included in the $30 registration fee and will be on location.*  Please indicate if you would like a vegetarian lunch option on the registration form.

We will meet indoors with safe distancing, or weather permitting, perhaps outdoors.

Donna Reynolds, Auburn event registrar, can provide driving directions if you need them.  She also has recommendations for lodging and restaurants nearby.

Please note, registration closes May 12, so be sure to register early to secure your place.

*Refunds can be made only if funds are available after all expenses are paid.
