2023 Banned Books

Presented By Great Books Council of San Francisco

The travel story told through the eyes of youth, Stephen King unfolds a grand adventure of 12 year old Gordie Lachance and his three friends who set out on a quest of their own.  Searching for a missing boy, they encounter his body on their quest in a miserably hot summer and learn that monsters don’t exist under beds but in the hearts of people.

Stephen King is a prolific writer with over 60 novels and numerous short stories, tales and personal reflections to his name.  His stories extend beyond the typical monster story and frequently delve into the hearts of people.  He is also one of the only writers to be banned in entirety from libraries and schools.

I hope you will join us for an examination of The Body, a   story that inspired the critically acclaimed movie Stand By   Me.  In the afternoon we will discuss his lecture at Virginia   Beach in which he discusses his thoughts on banning   books and his 1983 interview with Playboy Magazine which   allows us to get to know this “author like no other” better. (Links to both articles will be provided in the confirmation email upon registering.)

Sure to be a toe-dip in a genre widely discarded by critics, I   hope you will join me in an examination of my favorite   author, Stephen King.
