Exploring the Greater Literacy Landscape: Activating the Teaching and Learning Lives that We Want and Our Students Need

Thursday, June 15, 2023
8:30 am to 3:30 pm

In the world of education, the conversation on what the literacy landscape should look like changes on a daily basis. However, the way in which kids learn has largely remained the same–through motivation, curiosity, connectedness, and importantly, instructional choices that are both research-based and intentionally chosen. In this session, Kass Minor will engage educators with an exploration of the expansiveness of literacy landscapes as they pertain to teaching and learning in school spaces, interacting with our past, present, and future “whys” behind our choices to be in the teaching profession. Notably, participants will leave with an activated sense of their teacher-selves, creating opportunities for intentional, student-centered literacy choices in their classroom spaces.

Lunch will be provided along with a light breakfast.

Kass Minor Biography

Kass Minor is an inclusive educator and community organizer who is deeply involved in local, inquiry-based teacher research and school community development. Alongside partnerships with the University of Chicago, Teachers College Inclusive Classrooms Project, The Author Village, and the New York City Department of Education, since 2004, she has worked as a teacher, staff developer, adjunct professor, speaker, and documentarian. Kass reads books like other people listen to albums, and the classroom is her concert space. While Kass’s organizing work in school communities is inspired by her NorthStars Myles Horton and Fannie Lou Hamer, her pedagogy is centered in joy from the communities that surround her and motivated by the idea that every adult can teach, and every student can learn. Teacherhood, paired with motherhood, has driven her love of information sharing and redefining who gets to be a knower in the fiery world we live in today. She is the author of the forthcoming book, Teaching Fiercely: Spreading Joy and Justice in Our Schools, available for pre-order now, and will be released May 2, 2023.
