Keynote Speakers

Dan Raemer

Associate Professor Daniel B. Raemer, PhD

Director of Research and Development, Center for Medical Simulation
Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School

Dr Raemer's research is focused on patient safety and clinician performance in crisis situations. Dan has developed a special expertise in teamwork and crisis management over the past 15 years at the Center for Medical Simulation. In 2003, he received a unique award from the Harvard Department of Anaesthesia for "excellence in teaching." he has worked globally to establish the International Meeting on Medical Simulation, and is the founding trustee and a past president of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). In 2008, he received a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from SSH for his contributions to the field. He is also a Past-President of the Society for Technology in Anesthesia.

Conference Agenda

 Breakout Sessions:

"Become a Certified Educator"

Learn about the upcoming educator certification program. The panel experts will discuss criteria for becoming a certified educator, the benefits for obtaining this certification, and how to use the established elements to guide you in becoming an excellent simulation educator.

 "How to Handle the Unexpected"

This interactive session will review common "unexpected" events that occur during a simulation and discuss how to overcome these events while maintaining a high degree of psychological fidelity for the participant.

"Accreditation: What does it mean for me?"

Learn from experts in simulation about what is involved in submitting an accreditation application for your simulation center or how to use the established standards as a map for program success. Attendees will be able to dissect the accreditation self study tool as well as look at data from previous accreditation cycles.

"Using Simulation for Interprofessional Learning: The Why and How"

Participants will learn how simulation can be integrated into training healthcare providers from a wide variety of health care disciplines in order to foster better communication and teamwork which has been shown to decrease medical errors. Come learn about the current trends in interprofessional research and how to get started with an interprofessional lab at your facility.

"Increasing Psychological Fidelity in Simulation Using Moulage"

Join us for this interactive session in which the attendee will learn the value of using realistic moulage in simulation, and be able to explore creating new moulage techniques to simulate medical injuries and conditions, each participant will receive a copy of a moulage "recipe" book.

"An Introduction to Laerdal Vital Sim"

Through hands-on experience, attendees will learn ways to customize their VitalSim manikins to enhance their scenario-based simulations and their learning environment. In this session, attendees will learn about scenario building, uploading scenarios, navigation of the VitalSim remote, and functionality of the VitalSim platform manikins.

"SimMan 3G and SimMan Essentials"

Not a beginner's course! This is designed for intermediate and advanced skilled scenario programmers: Achieve greater efficiency and realism with your SimMan Essential and SimMan 3G scenarios using Physiological Trends and Event Handlers. In this session you will learn a step-by-step method to create new Trends and Handlers and how to edit existing ones, reducing instructor workload.
