Our Carbon Capture Journal conference in London on March 26th reviewed the latest developments in the industry to try to work out ways to reduce costs - and provided an update on latest industry developments.

Agenda

9.10 - Chairman's introduction - Karl Jeffery, publisher, Carbon Capture Journal

Harsh Pershad

9.15 - Latest developments on the carbon capture and storage industry
Harsh Pershad, energy consultant, Element Energy
- Developing large scale CO2 transport and storage infrastructure for the UK
- CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery in the North Sea - who really benefits?
- The costs for CO2 capture from existing UK industry

Gernot Schneider, Siemens
9.45 Technical challenges and cost reduction potential for post-combustion carbon capture
Gernot Schneider, director marketing and sales, Carbon Capture Sequestration, Siemens
 view slides

10.15 Lowering the cost of electricity generation with CCS:

Dr Mathieu Lucquiaud, Associate Programme Director, MSc in Carbon Capture & Storage, The University of Edinburgh
- Value and options to future proof CCS power plants to incorporate technology improvements
- DECC supported research on absorber columns, by Costain and the University of Edinburgh

10.30 Break

11.00 Update with SaskPower Boundary Dam Project
Philippe Micone, global sales manager, Cansolv
The Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration Project is a $1.4 billion project to retrofit the coal-fired unit 3 with carbon capture and an enhanced oil recovery system. The project when complete is expected to result in 1 million tonnes/year reduction in CO2 emissions. It will also reduce the output of Unit 3 from 139 MW to 110 MW. The project anticipates completion in 2015. The Canadian federal government paid $240 million towards the project. 11.30 Developing new CO2 capture solvents
Prateek Bumb, director, Carbon Clean Solutions

Basia Kielska
11.45 The importance of high integrity centrifugal pump design for a proper functioning and efficient CO2 capture and transfer process
Basia Kielska, Business Development manager, ClydeUnion Pumps, an SPX Brand.
- Challenges with pumping liquid CO2 - why every aspect of a pumping system for liquid CO2 needs to be specially designed
- Suction conditions are sensitive to temperature, due to CO2 phase changes at different temperatures -
- Additional risks include sealing, recirculation protection, surging

12.10 Where we are with carbon capture - Lord Oxburgh,   honorary president of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, and former chairman of Shell
View video

12.15 Panel discussion - what is the easiest way to reduce the cost of carbon capture?
