Trauma 101 - Trauma-Informed Care Overview

This training will afford attendees an opportunity to appreciate the complex nature of trauma and its aftermath. Research indicates 67% of the population has experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) and that increased exposure is predictive of a multitude of poor physical, mental and social outcomes throughout one’s lifespan. Increasing knowledge of how ACEs and other traumas affect people allows professionals and the general public to more easily recognize trauma effects and improve responses. With improved, trauma-informed responses, retraumatization can be avoided increasing safety for all involved.

Objectives:

  • Define trauma and  explore associated impact of exposure
  • Consider the unique implications of Adverse Childhood Experiences and expanded ACEs from a developmental perspective
  • Increase understanding of the role of resiliency
  • Discuss the 6 Principles of Care and brainstorm ways to incorporate principles into practice.
