Interpersonal Psychotherapy: Recovery Through Relationships
Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Institute

Faculty: Holly Swartz, MD, Dawit Wondimagegn, MD, Paula Ravitz, MD, & invited faculty

Dates: Friday April 8 & Saturday April 9, 2016
(both are full days)

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an effective time-limited treatment for depression across the lifespan for working through triggering life stressors of loss, bereavement, social role transitions, interpersonal hypersensitivity and disputes.  Grounded in attachment theory and a bio-psycho-social conceptualization of mental health, established by 40 years of outcome and process research, IPT is in international depression consensus treatment guidelines (APA; WHO; CanMAT; NICE). This interactive workshop with simulations and role-plays will help clinicians to improve outcomes and expand therapeutic repertoires with a focus on relational stressors and ways of coping. Psychiatrists, Holly Swartz, Paula Ravitz and Dawit Wondimagegn, IPT trainers from the U.S., Canada and Ethiopia come together to offer this IPT workshop with attention to interpersonal processes, engagement, communication analysis, and individual patient differences in patterns of relating and culture to improve clinical outcomes and therapeutic responsiveness.

Learning Goals & Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Use IPT to improve treatment of patients with depression.
  • Employ the Interpersonal Inventory, Communication Analysis and formulation with a relational understanding of individual patient’s differences, strengths and vulnerabilities to aid recovery from depression.
  • List the therapeutic guidelines and principles of IPT.
