Demographic and Enrollment Trends in Houston ISD

At our meeting last month, Steve Murdock described demographic trends in the state and noted that, given these trends, improving the education outcomes of low-income, and especially Hispanic, students will be vital to maintaining the economic vitality of the state.  As a follow-up, our June meeting will be with Mr. Justin Silhavy, demographer with HISD, who will talk about how the District is using it's own demographic research to create program and facility recommendations designed to improve services to meet the needs of the current and future student populations.

Justin Silhavy is the demographer for the Houston Independent School District and founder of Southwest Demographics. Mr. Silhavy began his career at Population and Survey Analysts, a Texas-based demographic consulting firm, before independently researching and planning for the Fort Bend Independent School District, the most racially and ethnically diverse school district in the state. He brings with him over one decade of experience in long-range enrollment forecasting and facility planning.  In 2013, he assisted Houston ISD with the historic annexation of North Forest ISD.

Mr. Silhavy holds a Master of Urban Planning from Texas A&M University where he specialized in housing and economic development. Throughout his career, he has performed housing research for over forty school districts enrolling over one million Texas students.
