100 Introduction to Construction Seminar
This self-paced four module Introduction to Construction seminar is an introduction to the construction industry, its parties, and processes. Students will become familiar with the different types of construction, the diverse roles, stages, and processes of a construction project. Students will develop an awareness of safety regulations, safety inspection, construction documents and their uses. Students will develop a working understanding of construction project management topics including estimating, project management, scheduling, close out and pay out.
101 Introduction to Construction Estimating
A self-paced course. Develop foundational knowledge of the procedures, materials, equipment, and practices that are needed in estimating for any trade or type of construction This estimating course provides an excellent introduction to the trade-specific estimating that we cover in Estimating and Bidding 1 and 2. The information from this course can be used in estimating any trade or type of construction.
102 Essential Construction Math
A self-paced introductory course that develops mathematical skills through practice and application to the construction trade. Calculation of board feet, area, volume of shapes and concrete footings, slabs, and conversions are studied. While this class is not a prerequisite for any other classes, it does provide a foundation for them.
103 Construction Blueprint Reading
Read architectural, structural, civil, mechanical and electrical blueprints. Practice looking up information and solving common construction problems by reading the blueprints.
105 Estimating and Bidding 1
The first of two hands-on detailed estimating courses in which students learn how to estimate general conditions, site work, excavation, concrete and masonry. Be sure to look over the prerequisites for this class here.
106 Estimating and Bidding 2
The second course features hands-on estimating and quantity take off activities associated with Metals, Wood, Doors and Windows, Finishes, Electrical, and Mechanical Estimating. You may take Estimating and Bidding 1 and 2 in any order.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT
107 Construction Materials and Processes
Develop foundational knowledge of construction materials and processes that utilize concrete, brick and CMU, metals, wood products, roofing, and more. Understand and report back on how materials and processes function in green construction. An overall construction system will be covered each week. Expand your studies to include materials and processes which are normally encountered by the student in his/her work place.
108 Construction Equipment and Methods
The course will introduce students to civil construction plans, determining earthwork quantities, equipment economics and utilization, equipment production rates, fundamentals of earthmoving and excavating, loading and hauling equipment.
CIVIL CONSTRUCTION
114 Estimating Civil Construction
This course introduces students to estimating civil engineering, heavy construction projects, and site work construction projects. This course will cover reading and understanding civil construction plans, determining earthwork quantities, determining crew make-up, and fundamentals of estimating various civil and site work components.
COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSTRUCTION LAW
Both oral and written communication carry a deep impact on the people you work with and the situations under which you work. Communication is multi-faceted. It includes nonverbal communication, body language, listening, inflection, and written communication. Without quality skills in each of these categories you are putting yourself and your career at risk. This STP Unit 2 online course is designed for you to become a more effective supervisor by becoming a more effective communicator. The skills you learn within the course will be put to use right away!
This 204P Contract Documents and Construction Law STP Unit 4 online course focuses on understanding the relationship between contract documents and the construction process.We will explore contractual relationships, legal roles and responsibilities, and contract types. Legal issues will be studied including regulatory issues, liens, bonds, insurance, and how standardized forms are used. General conditions clauses that affect levels of decision making authority, project close-out and the superintendents role as agent of the contractor will be studied. We will study legal issues that often result in construction disputes including differing site conditions, time and schedule impacts, change orders and changed conditions. We will also study contract dispute resolution including negotiations, alternative dispute resolutions, and litigation of disputes.
PLANNING MANAGEMENT
205T Planning and Scheduling, Unit 3
The Certificate in Construction Supervision program includes this 205T Planning and Scheduling STP Unit 3 online course because this is a primary technical skill required of the construction supervisor.
Information studied will include:
- The bar chart
- Precedence diagramming
- The arrow diagram
- The critical path
- Using networks
- Using the project schedule
- Maintaining the project schedule
- Applying the project schedule
Students will learn how to plan, prepare and update construction project schedules in this course. We will study construction planning and will practice preparing a project plan. Through the use of case studies we will learn you how to define construction activities, determine activity duration, and assemble the activities into a logical construction schedule. We will learn to create and use bar charts and critical path schedules. Methods for communication of the project plan will be applied in work shop type activities. We will study the use of computers in construction scheduling and investigate some of the popular scheduling programs currently in use. Other topics to be studies will include: assigning constraints, inputting resources, formatting options, sorting and filtering. Updating the schedule and the use of short interval production schedules will be stressed. Applying scheduling information to change orders, payment schedules and acceleration situations will be studied.
GREEN CONSTRUCTION
305 Building Green Buildings: The Contractor’s Perspective
The purpose of this course is to provide construction professionals with information that will help them to effectively bid, contract, build and close out green building projects. We will explore the green building process from the contractor’s and subcontractor’s point of view.
