Speakers and Panel members

Karen Britt is the western region program manager and support group liaison for Alzheimer’s Association NENY. She has worked in social adult day programs, adult home care, direct care for individuals with developmental disabilities in residential and day habilitation environments, and as a Medicaid service coordinator. She has developed and delivered many educational programs for the community-at-large, informal/family caregivers and professionals, and is a master trainer for Alzheimer’s Association’s Foundations of Dementia Care.

Sunny Buchman’s main strength is recognizing a need for, and then creating and implementing, programs that enhance the quality of life for others. A native of Glens Falls, she founded and served as the first president of the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council, created and implemented an arts program for Vietnam veterans, facilitates spiritual journey groups, and has been deeply involved in projects related to Judaism and Jewish education. She is the author of Precious Window of Time, her inspired account of caring for her husband during their journey through Alzheimer’s.

Martin S. Finn, CPA, LLM is an attorney, certified public accountant and founding partner of Lavelle and Finn, LLP. He counsels clients on estate, financial, tax, business and elder law issues including personal and corporate tax planning, business counseling, structuring of business transactions, estate administration and estate and business succession planning. A major part of his practice involves assisting elderly clients and their families with tax and legal issues such as asset preservation, maximizing wealth and retirement income, governmental programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) and disability planning including use of durable powers of attorney, supplemental needs trusts, health care proxies and living wills.

Elizabeth “Beth” Smith-Boivin was appointed executive director of Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York Chapter (AANENY) in August 2012. Prior to her appointment, she served for ten years as director of the Anne B. and Leon J. Goldberg Alzheimer’s/Dementia Resource Program at The Alzheimer’s Center of Albany Med. She served as board president of the board of AANENY, has been a trustee since 1998, is a support group facilitator and continues to serve as a member of the Caregiver Conference Planning Committee.  From 1997 to 2005 Ms. Smith-Boivin served as a member of the Alzheimer’s Association National Board of Directors. Ms. Smith-Boivin has served as a reviewer for the New York State Department of Health Dementia Grants Program, and is an appointee to the Albany County Long Term Care Council and the NYS Governor’s Coordinating Council for Services Related to Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias.

Paul R. Solomon, Ph.D. is clinical director of the Memory Clinic. He is a professor of psychology and founding chairman of the neuroscience program at Williams College and is currently a visiting professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Solomon has authored nine books, contributed chapters to 20 edited volumes, and co-authored and presented over 200 research papers. He developed the “7 Minute Screen”, and the “Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Questionnaire” (ADCQ) instruments to facilitate the early recognition of Alzheimer’s and related disorders. Along with Dr. Andrew Budson, he recently authored “Memory Loss:  A Practical Guide for Clinicians.”
