 United We Stand: Shaping Our Future

Building on the tremendous success of last year’s education conference, NAMI-NYS is excited to once again broaden our scope this year to present the biggest and most inclusive educational event in our history. United We Stand: Shaping Our Future, is designed to demonstrate how people living with a mental illness, their families and service providers must stand united to shape a future which finds, the research of today becoming the most beneficial treatments of tomorrow; a more effective system for the delivery of mental health services; and the current stigmas of mental illness being transformed to a public comprehension of these diseases and compassion for those who live with them.

The 2014 conference will feature an expanded focus with increased workshop sessions on both Friday and Saturday and plenary sessions which will educate people with a mental illness, their family members and doctors on their roles in shaping a future where recovery from a mental illness is more achievable than it has ever been before. There will also be sessions on how we as mental health advocates must work with our elected officials and government agencies to improve the delivery of mental health services. We are also excited to engage the next generation of advocates by including the first ever Young Adult focus track on Saturday.

2014 Legislative Champion Award

 U.S. Representative Tim Murphy

NAMI-NYS is honored to present our 2014 Legislative Champion Award to United States Representative Tim Murphy (PA). The award acknowledges Rep. Murphy's dedication to reforming the delivery of mental health services and his authorship of H.R. 3717, "The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act." The award will be presented on Friday, November 14th during dinner. Following the award presentation, Rep Murphy will present and educate NAMI-NYS members and conference attendees on why this bill is so important, how it will fix many of the fractures in the mental health system and how we can advocate for the bill's passage.

NAMI-NYS could not think of a government leader more deserving of this award or one who has had a bigger hand in shaping our future than Representative Murphy. Representative Murphy has used his position as Chair of the House Oversight and Investigations Sub-Committee and his experience as a child and trauma psychologist to hold hearings on the state of mental health services for more than two years. The result of these hearings was his authorship of H.R. 3717, This landmark bill with bi-partisan co-sponsorship is the most comprehensive piece of federal legislation ever introduced to reform the mental health system, address the flaws in the delivery of mental health care and ensure the protection of those with the most severe forms of mental illness. The bill would:

• Increase hospital beds and proper care and decrease criminalization for people with serious types of mental illness.
• Increase family access to information and eliminate barriers of communication between families and providers.
• Permit federal Medicaid dollars to be used to pay for acute inpatient psychiatric treatment.
• Expand effective AOT services
• Increase funding to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
• Re-appropriate the budget of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to designate increased funding for mental health programs for those with serious mental illness.

We are honored to have Representative Murphy join us and look forward to thanking him for being our legislative champion and projecting in Washington the cry our grassroots advocates have been voicing for years.

2014 Connie Lieber Research Award Recipient Dr. Stephen Glatt

NAMI-NYS is delighted to announce that Stephen Glatt, Ph.D, has been chosen to receive the 2014 NAMI-NYS Connie Lieber Research Award. Dr. Glatt is the Director of the Psychiatric Genetic Epidemiology & Neurobiology Laboratory (PsychGENe Lab) at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

 This award honors Dr. Glatt’s work on candidate-gene and genome-wide association, expression, and functional studies of schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, heroin dependence, and other psychiatric and substance use disorders.  The ultimate objective of his research is to identify the causes of these illnesses, and to find biomarkers that will facilitate earlier identification, intervention, and prevention.

 The award will be presented to Dr. Glatt on Friday evening November 14^th and Dr. Glatt will give the evening’s featured presentation following his receiving the award.

Conference Agenda:

The 2014 conference agenda features the broadest and most in-depth scope of any Education Conference produced in the history of NAMI-NYS. Attendees will benefit from an exceptional array of plenary sessions featuring some of the country’s leaders in shaping mental health research; new treatment options; addressing suicide; depression; children’s mental health; mental health services in the military community; ways to involve families in the recovery team; and how mental health issues are perceived by the public.

In addition to the plenary sessions, we have planned the largest number of workshops ever offered at a NAMI-NYS conference. This year will feature three workshop sessions on Saturday afternoon, allowing participants to create a conference experience based on their personal interests and concerns.

This year will also see the return of Friday's focus tracks on children and adolescents, veterans and military families and criminal justice issues. 

This year will see the introduction of a Young Adult focus track featuring three workshop sessions on Saturday afternoon.
