Workshop Abstract
For decades, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), often referred to as Domestic Violence, has been considered the purview of criminal justice; however, since the late 1990s the CDC and World Health Organization have categorized IPV as a public health crisis with significant correlates to mental and behavioral health, substance abuse, and trauma. The purpose of the IPV Workshop for mental/behavioral health professionals is to promote greater awareness and understanding of IPV, as well as its prevalence and intersectionality with behavioral and mental health; and to empower providers to assess for and respond to IPV when it presents.
Mental health, behavioral health and substance abuse counselors are truly the front-line for many IPV victims and perpetrators. Following the workshop, participants will be able to identify indications of IPV, engage with clients in an informed, compassionate and trauma-informed way, assist with safety planning and, as needed, provide informed referrals.

Learning objectives
- Participants will learn about the prevalence, impact and dynamics of IPV victimization and perpetration.
- Participants will learn about common mental/behavioral, substance abuse and trauma correlates that are consistent with current or previous IPV exposure.
- Participants will learn how to apply trauma-informed methods when responding to patients affected by IPV; including how to avoid vicarious trauma and the importance of provider self-care
- Participants will learn how to manage confidentiality, how to document IPV related issues, and how provider collaboration can lead to improved client outcomes.
- Participants will receive guidelines and information about safety planning, local IPV resources, legal remedies, and other supports available for IPV victims.
