Speech and Language Development in Early Education Settings

 

 

Course Description:

This course will discuss the typical speech development patterns of young children. Through lecture, large and small group discussions and activities, this course will discuss activities that can be used in early childhood settings to promote and support language development for typically developing children, English Language Learners and children with speech and language delays.


Course Objectives:
1. Describe the difference between speech and language, and between receptive and expressive language;
2. Identify the components of language, as well as typical and non-typical patterns of speech development;
3. List strategies to support diverse language learners; 4. Practice planning activities to support speech and language development and learn to use storytelling to support language development.
