STEM Education in Early Childhood Settings

Course Description:  From birth, children are developing STEM skills as they interpret and react to their world.  Science, technology, engineering and math are four areas that are not only important, but that children naturally enjoy.  Educators can build on each child’s natural curiosity by providing developmentally appropriate STEM learning experiences in early childhood settings.  In this learning event, participants will discover the STEM capabilities of young children, with a focus on supporting STEM learning for ages 3-5 years of age.  Participants will use MA Early Learning Guidelines and STEM Crosswalks with PK Standards to weave STEM content into program learning experiences.

 Learning Outcomes:

1.      Integrate current knowledge about STEM with new awareness and knowledge regarding supporting STEM learning in the preschool classroom;

2.      Apply effective STEM teaching practices;

3.      Utilize the STEM Crosswalk, Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences and other STEM resources to plan STEM learning activities;

4.      Plan developmentally appropriate STEM activities;

5.      Integrate STEM learning throughout the curriculum and learning environment; and

6.      Evaluate STEM teaching practice and set goals for program improvement.

Prerequisite for educators enrolling:  This class will be taught in a webinar format, in two 2-hour live webinars with a required assignment.  In order to participate in this class you must have a computer and speakers, high speed internet, an email account, and basic computer skills (using the internet, downloading and attaching documents to email, and navigating the webinar software).
