Join us for our 7th Annual LIVE ChalkHeART Challenge created for middle school, junior high, and high schools from around the state.

Here’s how it works: Any Idaho public or private middle, junior high or high school may enter up to two teams comprising of one to four students. Each team should select a poem to illustrate with chalk from:

  • The We Choose All of Us poem is available here.
  • The middle/junior high poem book is available here and at your school library.
  • The high school poem book is available here and at your school library.

***Bonus Points*** for selecting:

  • a poem from your school
  • an award-receiving poem (pg 7-15 in the MS book or pg 7-17 in the HS book)
  • the We Choose All of US Poem

Teams will illustrate the poem LIVE in chalk while at the Boise event Thursday, May 3rd, 2018.

Chalk up prizes for your team and school art program!

ChalkHeART Awards $100!
Does your submission educate and inspire youth to end gender violence? Does your artwork represent the message of the selected poem? Select a poem like the Stories of Transformation Award recipients (pages 7-15 in the middle/junior high poem book and pages 7-17 in the high school poem book), or the We Choose All of Us poem.

Here’s how you win: Amazing local artists will select our LIVE ChalkHeART Award Recipients. ChalkHeART teams must be in compliance with event rules (see below) to be considered for awards!

Register soon: Schools may register two teams! Only 30 spaces available for teams participating in the LIVE event! Once they are gone – they are gone.  Submit the online contest registration as soon as you can to secure your teams space; registration will close Friday, April 27th.

Guidelines & Rules for Chalk Artists

1) Your team must be registered to chalk. Spaces will be approximately 4 ft. X 4 ft. and will be chalkboard  space. On the ground, live competition runs from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Linen Building – rain or shine (we will move the event to an alternate location if we encounter extreme weather - teams will be notified). Teams may begin picking up their registration packets at 6:00pm.

2) Illustrate one of the poems. Teams can be comprised of one to four students and schools may have up to two teams. Every student on a team should be from the same school or art program. Teachers/leaders can coach during the competition, but cannot participate in the chalking. No words may appear within the art. ChalkHeART reserves the right to refuse objectionable material. Whether an illustration includes objectionable material will be determined at the discretion of the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence.

3) One chalkboard will be provided for each registered team. You may use your own chalk but it must be water-based. No paint, crayon, ink or other non-washable or permanent products. No fixatives may be used on the chalk drawings. If you are not sure what you can bring, call and ask. If you need help with chalk and other supplies, please let us know!

4) Judging - Each team will be evaluated by Idaho-based artists and scored based on the following criteria: originality, representation of poem, and overall presentation. Bonus points will be given to teams depicting award-receiving poems or a poem from your school and extra bonus points will be given to teams who depict the We Choose All Of US poem. In the event of a tie the judges will reevaluate the tied ChalkHeART art according to the criteria until the tie is broken.

5) By submitting your teams’ entry, the team leader/teacher certifies that the team is submitting its own, non-copyrighted work. The team leader/teacher nor team members/artists are not entitled to payment for your submission, unless awarded a prize in accordance with the rules for judging. By submitting a chalk illustration, the team leader/teacher and artists are granting the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence and its funders the right to use the entry and other information provided with the entry as it sees fit, to the extent allowed by law, including posting on ourgenderevolution.org, duplication in the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence materials, and in other manner or medium now or hereafter known or devised. The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence, has the sole discretion in determining the extent and manner of use of submissions and is not obligated to use any submissions.
