Houston History Conference 

As a part of the City of Houston's 175th Anniversary Celebration, the Houston History Association (HHA) is sponsoring a conference on Houston's history, "Milestones and Arrivals: 175 Years of Coming to Houston.  Co-sponsors: Texas State Historical Association, University of Houston—Center for Public History, Houston History Magazine, and Architecture Center Houston Foundation.

Houston, throughout its history, has been a city of immigrants, whether individuals, groups, businesses, corporations or institutions.  Why is this so?   What is it about Houston that attracted and continues to attract this influx of people?  How has this continuing migration helped build Houston into an internationally prominent city?  What are the significant milestones in this growth?

A panel of experts will discuss these and other questions about Houston's history during a morning presentation followed by an interactive Q&A session with the audience.   Panelists include: Stephen Klineberg, PhD, Rice University; Joseph Pratt, PhD, University of Houston; and Bernadette Pruitt, PhD, Sam Houston State University.  Registered attendees are invited to join us for a luncheon at which former Houston Mayor Bill White will be the featured speaker and also will present the HHA's first annual "Houston History Hero" award to Betty T. Chapman, recognizing  her research, publications, and promotion of Houston's history. 

Attendees will have opportunities to meet representatives of local historical and preservation groups at their exhibit tables in the foyer.  During the afternoon, several break-out sessions will feature presentations on various topics related to Houston's history.
