The Greater Birmingham Mayors' Prayer Breakfast

A Regional U.S. National Day of Prayer Gathering

Dear Partners in Progress,

Awakening the moral concious of a region or a nation is a monumental task. It begins with remembering an often forgotten God. Fifty Five years ago a group of businessmen remembered an ancient scriture that said, "If my people that are called be name would humble themselves and pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and heal their land." On May 2, 2019, we will stop as a nation and join thousands of cities across America in oberving The U.S. National Day of Prayer at the 55th annual observance of the Greater Birmingham Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast. Join me us in making this a time of uniting our region to pray for our country, our state and regional governments. We are asking you to support this gathering that continues to foster unity and regional cooperation.

This U.S. National Day of Prayer event is a significant part of Birmingham’s legacy. In the aftermath of the chaotic 1963 Birmingham Campaign, the Reverend Billy Graham held Birmingham’s first integrated event at Legion Field on Easter Sunday (held on Birmingham’s 100th birthday and during Pentecost week) in 1964. Shortly thereafter, local Birmingham businessmen Mark Hodo, Chairman of City Federal Savings and Loan, united the business community to host the first Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast as Mayor Albert Boutwell ushered in a new form of city Government for Birmingham.

Since this first call to prayer, this event has expanded to include the Mayors in Jefferson and Shelby County municipalities to truly foster fellowship and greater cooperation in the Birmingham region.

Sincerely Yours,

Mark Miller Frank A. Woodson
