Nationally-known speakers will address the issues facing communities in New England as they grapple with balancing livability and change.

Keynote speaker:  Charles Marohn, of Strong Towns, who will address the finanical implications of development decisions made by communites, and where we have drifted from the historically-successful model of town building

Strong Towns is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that helps America's towns achieve financial strength and resiliency.

They travel the nation to promote a complete understanding of the costs that are associated with our communities' methods of growth, and they advocate to address those costs via productive changes in our pattern of development.

About Chuck Marohn:

Chuck Marohn, PE, AICP, is the President and Co-Founder of the non-profit, Strong Towns.  His background as an engineer and planner working as a consultant for dozens of cities and towns across Minnesota gives him an intimate understanding of how land use and infrastructure projects get designed, funded and built. This unique insight across traditional silos is what led him to start Strong Towns in the wake of the national financial crisis that left so many local governments reeling from the sudden halt in development. A nationally sought after speaker, Chuck has given over 200 presentations to public officials, staff professionals and local citizens in the last five years to help them find a new pathway forward.

Chuck is the author of Thoughts on Building Strong Towns (Volume 1), and  A World Class Transportation System. He is also the primary author of the Strong Towns Blog and the host of the Strong Towns Podcast and See it Differently TV.  He holds professional engineering and planning degrees from the University of Minnesota.

Chuck and his wife live with their two daughters and two Samoyeds just north of Baxter, Minnesota.

R. John Anderson, of Anderson + KIm and the Congress of New Urbanism will talk about lean urbanism, the idea of making postiive change on a micro-level - one building, one rehad, one empty lot at a time,

John Anderson started out as an electrician. A job site accident landed him at a drafting table.

Moving from the trades to project management on a string of progressively larger projects, in 1989 John joined the developers' staff for the Mall of America. The four year project exhausted any interest in segregated conventional suburban development.   Managing infill projects in Minneapolis and St. Paul for a local developer led to an introduction to the Congress for the New Urbanism.

For the past 20 years, John has worked at the pragmatic intersection of design and development.  He is currently a Principal with Anderson|Kim Architecture + Urban Design and the Managing Partner with Chico Building and Land, the firm’s development company.

John and his partner Architect David Kim, are currently working on development and design projects in Western New York, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and California.

Kevin Klinkenberg, of the Savannah Development  and Renewal Authority is going to talk about where bicycles and pedestrians fit into a lively downtown.

For over twenty years Kevin has worked as an urban designer, using the various skills of design, planning and form-based coding to create walkable communities. He's worked for developers, cities, not-for-profits and public agencies to create environments that are sustainable and sociable. Kevin's been blogging about these issues for years, and wrote a book called "Why I Walk" published in 2014.

Today, Kevin lives in Savannah, GA, and is the Executive Director of the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority. Their  mission is to renew, revitalize and develop greater downtown Savannah.  They work with the support of the City of Savannah and a board of committed community-minded leaders.

Rick Chellman, of TND Engineers will talk about good street design and how it makes your community attractive, functional and successful.

Other speakers will adddress zoning as a driver for good development, and the possibilities for small-scale residential development.
