Planning For All Ages 

What would an Age-Friendly Community look like, what sort of services would be available, and how would residents of all ages be able to enjoy their community to its fullest? 

These are the sorts of questions that staff at Southern NH Planning Commission (SNHPC) is tackling with assistance from community champions and partnering agencies.  Thanks to the continued support from Tufts Health Plan Foundation, AARP, and NH DOT, the SNHPC’s team will share their findings on age-friendly assessments and surveys, and how communities have responded to the age-friendly pilot program: their successes and lessons learned in their efforts towards creating an age-friendly region.

 Attendees will learn:

1. Whether a business, an organization, or a community, age friendly assessments are a great tool to gauge how open any given entity is to people of all ages.  SNHPC will review assessment tools with participants, encouraging them to bring them back to their communities to begin the conversation.
2. Transportation is the number one issue identified by people of all ages that concerns them as they get older.  Participants will learn about the community efforts that SNHPC has been involved with to move transportation concerns into strategic improvements.
3. Housing concerns are also on the top of the list of concerns for people as they age: millennials trying to get into their first home and older adults trying to downsize into affordable homes. The  SNHPC will share their experiences working with communities to create age-friendly zoning, and ask participants to share ideas on how to enable diverse choices in places to live in their own communities
4. Recreation and engagement, those elements that make up “quality of life” for people of all ages are key elements to age-friendly communities.  SNHPC staff will share memorable partnerships and ask participants to share their own stories and ideas for building key partnerships that provide engagement opportunities in their communities

This workshop is for planners, municipal staff, economic development people, those interested in choices in places to live and how to get about, community leaders and thought leaders, and anyone with an interest in creating vibrant and delightful places for everyone to enjoy living, working, and/or playing.

9:10 to 9:50 Age-Friendly Assessments: Review of SNHPC’s age-friendly community and business assessments. Group break-out discussing assessment tools they can bring back to their communities.

9:50 to 10:30 The Challenges of Creating Age-Friendly Housing: The SNHPC team will share their experiences working with communities to create age-friendly zoning and engage participants in a fun, eye-opening activity to help visualize diverse living choices in their own communities.
