2018 Ag Outlook

Thursday, March 8, 2018

  Mark Core, Vermeer Corporation

  10:00 am - 11:00 am

Nine billion people. That is how many people we must feed by 2050. Mark Core’s presentation will focus on “who will do the work” as we embrace that challenge. The entire agriculture chain, including manufacturing, retailers, farmers, and processors, is already being challenged on a daily basis to find the human capital to accomplish the work. What can be done to alleviate this pain?  How will the challenge affect rural sociology dynamics?

Keith Wiebe, International Food Policy Research Institute

  11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Markets and weather change on a daily basis, and policies change from year to year, but what can we say about agriculture over the longer term? This presentation will explore some of the big challenges and opportunities facing agriculture looking several decades ahead to mid-century. These include factors that will affect demand for agricultural commodities (such as changes in global population, incomes, and diets – especially in developing countries), as well as factors that will affect production (such as changes in technology and climate). Keith Wiebe will share results from recent global analyses and discuss how this kind of information can help us plan for the challenges of the future.

Lunch  12:15 pm - 1:00 pm  Brandi Janssen, Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health

  Paul Georgy, Allendale, Inc.

  1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Georgy will also discuss the prospects of increased US grain demand as global supplies continue to grow, and he’ll share hedge strategies you can use with your banker.
