Boat the Bay

Thursday, June 12, 2014
9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Manteo

Climb aboard the federation’s skiff for a fun-filled ride through Shallowbag Bay. We’ll explore the estuary and get to meet, face-to-face, many of its inhabitants using different catch-and-release methods.

Participants will meet at the N.C. Coastal Federation’s Manteo office for a brief orientation before boarding the skiff for the boat trip. The captain will venture out into Shallowbag Bay, part of the Roanoke Sound watershed, on an investigative quest to determine why the estuary is such an important habitat, and is often referred to as the "nursery of the sea".

We will pull up several baited crab pots and check for any Atlantic blue crab that may have found their way inside. If we catch any "keeper size", we can send them home with you for dinner!

We’ll also pull a small net on the back of the boat and take a biological survey to measure and count the fish, shrimp and other critters that call the estuary home. Come see what an abundant ecosystem we have along the NC Coast, and learn more about some of the federation’s work to preserve it.

The trip is $25 for adults and $15 for children, ages 5-18.  There is a maximum of 6 participants per trip. Children must be at least 5 years of age and must be accompanied on the trip by an adult.

Registration is required and is non-refundable. If a trip is cancelled due to bad weather, the program will be rescheduled to Thursday afternoon, or Friday. If a trip is rescheduled due to weather and participants are not able to attend, a refund or transfer to another program date may be issued.
