Local Bites:
Cruising, Clamming and Chowder

Saturday, August 23, 2014
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education Center, Wrightsville Beach

Climb aboard The Shamrock and set off for a day of boat cruising, clamming, beach combing and feasting with Captain Joe Abbate and federation staff. Along the way, observe and listen to stories about the delightful shorebirds and stunning coastal environment. We’ll stop along the waterways (exact location is a secret!) where the federation’s Scientist Tracy Skrabal and Advocate Mike Giles will demonstrate how to dig clams. With full buckets, guests will head to uninhabited Masonboro Island for a class on making true Carolina-style clam chowder - rich with fresh clams, potatoes, veggies and bacon. While the chowder is simmering, snack on locally famous noshes, such as pimento cheese from Robert’s Market in Wrightsville Beach. Then, tuck into steaming bowls of chowder paired with cornbread. For dessert, sample cookies from a local bakery. After the feast, join federation staff for some beach games, take a leisurely stroll, collect shells or relax and enjoy paradise.

Register Now!

The event is $75 per person ages 12 and up, $55 per person ages 5-11 and participants must be 5 years of age or older to attend. All proceeds will benefit the federation's education programming.

Participants are invited to bring hats, bathing suits, clothes that can get wet and muddy, water shoes, towels, extra clothes, and small beach chairs (optional).
