My Son the Doctor - October 20, 2021
My Son the Doctor has been bringing the music of Eastern Europe to Richmond and Central Virginia since 2006. We pride ourselves on offering an eclectic, infectiously danceable mix of musics from all over Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and various parts of the Mediterranean world with a special emphasis on Yiddish, Hebrew, and Romani traditions. We play Klezmer dance tunes, Yiddish folk and theater songs, Israeli folk songs, Chassidic songs, Ladino songs, contemporary and traditional Romani songs from Serbia, the Czech Republic, and Italy, and Balkan folk and pop songs from Serbia, Macedonia, and Romania. All songs are performed in their original languages. Our line-up includes both professional and talented non-professional musicians with backgrounds in everything from Punk Rock to Polka to Jazz, blues, and classical music, and it reflects the eclectic sensibilities and deep talent pool of Richmond’s music scene.
We are dedicated to presenting the music we play in an informative, respectful, and exciting way that celebrates the power of music to cross boundaries and to bring people together on the ground of their common humanity. Although our repertoire is centered on the music of East European Jews, we play music from other traditions from that part of the world because we recognize how much all of the traditions in the region drew from one another, and we play it all with a sense of our own North American experiences and backgrounds.
