Medication Assisted Treatment for Persons Struggling with Substance Use Disorders and
Co-Occurring Disorders

Presenter: Romas Buivydas, PhD, LMHC

Medication Assisted Treatment is quickly becoming the standard of care for certain substance use disorders across the country. Many persons who are addicted to substances have co-occurring mental health disorders.  However, mental health and addiction treatment systems are often separated resulting in persons being treated separately for multiple, but many times, related disorders. This interactive workshop will provide information on the integrated treatment of SUDs and CODs, the effects of CODs on treatment outcomes, the effects of sysmptom severity, and the effects of CODs on progress while in MAT. A discussion of treatment issues and considerations for persons with CODs who participate in MAT programs will be presented.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this program, attendees will be able to:

  • Learn about the best practice "trifecta" of Medication Assisted Treatment of SUDs
  • Learn about how integrated treatment of SUDs, CODs can occur, and its outcomes
  • Be able to discuss the effects of symptom severity and the effects of CODs on treatment progress while on MAT
  • Be able to identify treatment issues as well as specific consideration for clients with CODs who are on MAT
