2021-2022 Faith Formation Registration

The Office of Faith Formation at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish has spent the summer months getting ready for an excellent upcoming year.  If you have participated in the program before, welcome back. If you are new, welcome!

Who's guiding the program...

Monica LaFond, Director of Faith Formation for PreK-Grade 5 and Service, mlafond@olossharon.org

Teresa Coda, Director of Faith Formation for Youth and Young Adults, tcoda@olossharon.org

Program Information

The reality of the COVID-19 pandemic required us to rethink and reimagine faith formation activities last program year. As we return to a sense of normalcy this year, we seek to integrate what worked well last year with what we missed from years past, as well as to continue to prioritize safety for all of our students and teachers.  Please read below to learn what this will look like for each of our programs.

The Archdiocese of Boston recently issued new guidelines strongly recommending that all parishes postpone in-person faith formation programming at this time. After taking into account the Archdiocese's recommendation, COVID infection rates in our community, and projected trends over the next few months, Fr. Daly and the OLOS staff have decided that faith formation programming at OLOS will take place online until January 2022.

If you determine that our plans for faith formation sessions will not work well for your family and would like to explore homeschooling curriculum, feel free to contact Monica or Teresa for resource recommendations.

 Pre-K through Grade 5

The PreK through Grade 5 program will consist of two to three classes per month, with additional program components (including two-hour mini-retreats in January and March) for second graders preparing to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Until at least January 2022, these class sessions will take place via Zoom. Grade 2 sessions will focus on preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist using the Blest Are We curriculum by publisher RCL Benziger.  All sessions are taught by teams of trained and dedicated catechists, and classes will be held at the Cottage Street Elementary School on designated Sunday mornings from 9:45-10:45 am.

Please note that students must be 4 years old by September 1 to register for the PreK class.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Middle School faith formation will occur in a hybrid format this year. Monthly sessions will take place over Zoom, and beginning- mid- and end-year mini retreats will be held in person.

Zoom Sessions: All middle school youth will attend a monthly Zoom session consisting of a lesson taught by Teresa Coda and a small group discussion (small groups include approximately 10 middle school students and will be led by 2-3 Peer Ministers or an adult facilitator).  Sessions will meet from 5:00-6:00 p.m. one Sunday each month.

Students will also have the opportunity to request to be placed in the same group as a particular friend/friends.  We will do our best to honor these requests, so long as the friend(s) indicate the same session day when registering.

Mini Retreats: Middle School mini retreats (2 hours each) will take place in O’Connell Hall at the beginning, middle and end of the year. The purpose of the retreats is to give students the opportunity to strengthen their sense of community with one another in a way that is best done in person.
