The Waltham Partnership for Youth invites you to attend the 2018 Linking Education and Business Breakfast.
At Waltham Partnership for Youth, we focus on aligning the talent, energy, and resources of community stakeholders like you to the needs of children and teens. Our goal is to build opportunities for youth to thrive into adulthood by creating initiatives between business, community, and educational institutions. Your support impacts thousands of Waltham's children and teens through notable WPY programs, including:
- Ready? Set? Job! Waltham High School students receive summer job placements with local businesses as well as structured career development opportunities throughout the year.
- Weekend Programming: from museum visits to community dodgeball tournaments, our weekend activities keep children and teens active, engaged, and safe.
- Waltham Youth and Community Coalition: a collaborative effort between high school students and adults to reduce substance use among teens.
- Youth Interpreters Program: Our trained Youth Interpreters are working hard to make cultural, civic, and educational opportunities accessible to all youth and families in our community.
- WPY also convenes community leaders in efforts to close achievement gaps in the city’s schools, respond to pervasive mental health challenges among teens, address systemic public transportation issues, and activate more experiential learning opportunities in the city.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Melodie Knowlton
Head of the Thomas M. Menino Vertex Learning Lab
Dr. Knowlton's work at the Vertex Learning Lab integrates the resources and knowledge of Boston businesses and educational institutions to maintain a robust STEM program for Boston Public School students. Her efforts provide Boston youth skills and opportunities to flourish as the next generation's scientists and health care professionals.
A graduate of Harvard Medical and Ohio State University, Dr. Knowlton's expertise in the sciences is well-rounded and practical. She brings an educator's perspective as a former science teacher and Head of the Biology Department at the Cambridge School as well as a former instructor for the Harvard University Extension School. She also possesses impressive research experience as the Presidential Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Novartis Institutes of BioMedical Research. Dr. Knowlton's experience in both the research industry and in education provide her the unique power to bring together various stakeholders, all the while providing transformative experiences for her students.

Brandeis University students provide over 40,000 hours of community service every year, from serving as teaching assistants to running an afterschool program for children with developmental disabilities. Through the Department of Community Service, Department of Experiential Learning and Teaching, and the Education Department, the university maintains a robust presence in the lives of Waltham children and teens. About Waltham Parternship for Youth

Our mission is to identify needs of Waltham youth and leverage resources to meet those needs. We are committed to making sure youth voice and leadership are central to all that we do. Our vision is that all Waltham youth have the opportunity to become productive citizens in the workforce and in the community.
We do this work in three primary ways: developing youth programming, supporting and enhancing existing programming, and encouraging multi-sector collaboration.
- DEVELOPING YOUTH PROGRAMMING: We develop new youth programming based on community needs assessments. The Waltham Family School and Healthy Waltham, two independent nonprofits, both began as WPY programs.
- SUPPORTING AND ENHANCING EXISTING PROGRAMMING: We provide support and capacity building to community partners to help sustain and enhance current programming.
- ENCOURAGING MULTI-SECTOR COLLABORATION: We convene diverse stakeholders to work collectively and strategically toward improved opportunities and outcomes for Waltham's youth.
LINKING EDUCATION AND BUSINESS BREAKFAST
The Linking Education and Business Breakfast is our annual fundraiser and flagship event. It brings together roughly 200 local business leaders, educators, and community leaders for a brief snapshot on the state of education in Waltham and an opportunity to think creatively about business-education partnerships that truly increase opportunities and outcomes for youth.
This year is a particularly exciting one, as Waltham is transitioning from the traditional education model to student-centered, project-based learning. To be successful, we need community partners and local businesses to join with us to offer experiential, interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students. We will invite attendees to consider how they might play an integral role in the changing landscape of education in Waltham.
