Gearing Up will honor the community of volunteers and supporters who have made our work possible, with special recognition of those who have been with us since our earliest days. All funds raised will support mentorship of our youth leaders.

Mingle with friends, alumni, and current students of Community Bike Works. Join youth leaders on a student's journey through Community Bike Works, and enjoy a look at 20 years of Earn a Bike.

About Community Bike Works

Since the first students stepped into our bike shop in the summer of 1995 to participate in our new Earn a Bike program, Community Bike Works has been a safe haven for the boys and girls of Allentown, a place where students gain confidence and practical skills. In 20 years, more than 3,500 students have participated in Earn a Bike!

The lessons go well beyond bikes. From Earn a Book to afterschool Drop-in, students have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities with adult mentors. Once they turn 12, students are invited to become youth leaders, serving as Earn a Bike instructors while participating in semester-long sessions on topics from career planning to being citizens in their community.

Josh Ortiz came to Bike Works when he was 11. Following Earn a Bike, he served as a youth volunteer and then a paid youth apprentice. Now 19, he is a sophomore at Temple University. In his words:

“What I learned at Community Bike Works goes well beyond bikes. The staff and volunteers of Bike Works have helped me to grow as a man. One volunteer introduced me to Temple, and others have helped with everything from transportation to internship planning. I know how invested everyone at Community Bike Works is in my success in college and in life, and that means so much.”
