There is something about being an engineer, isn't there?  

How much of this sounds familiar?  You love your creative work.  You enjoy a challenging engineering problem.  You like thinking about your task at all hours of the day.  Your best ideas sometimes come when you least expect them.  And you certainly don't need someone looking over your shoulders or asking you questions or requesting status reports when you could be working. So the question becomes, "How do you avoid being micromanaged?"

There is also something about being an engineering manager.  

How much of his sounds familiar? Managers do not like surprises.  They know how engineers like to work.  In fact, many managers were once "individual-contributor engineers".  As a manager your job is to understand what is happening so you can help if necessary.  So how much oversite do you ask for?  How often do you ask for status reports or meetings?  The question becomes, "How do you avoid the label of micromanger?" or even more critical, "How do you get the information you need to do your job without alienating the engineers you depend on?"
