Workshop Faculty:

Blog headshotMarisa (Reddy) Randazzo, Ph.D. is founder and President of Threat Assessment Resources  International, which helps businesses, educational institutions, and security professionals to assess threats and prevent violence. She works with law enforcement agencies and celebrity protective services to investigate threats and stalking cases, and trains individual clients on basic and advanced threat assessment strategies.  She also trains high-profile clients, their families, and their protective details on kidnapping prevention and escape tactics; advises clients on sensitive internal investigations; and, trains investigative professionals how to detect deception and interview more effectively.  She also serves as a subject matter expert and trainer for the Campus Threat Assessment Training initiative under a grant from the US Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.  Before joining the private sector, Dr. Randazzo served for ten years with the U.S. Secret Service, most recently as the agency’s Chief Research Psychologist.  She directed Secret Service research on presidential threats and attacks, insider threats, terrorist risk assessment, security breaches, stalking, and other types of targeted violence.  She has interviewed numerous attackers, stalkers, and rampage shooters.  An accomplished public speaker, Dr. Randazzo has trained over 10,000 law enforcement, intelligence, and security professionals, throughout the United States, Canada, and the European Union, on threat assessment investigations and threat management strategies.  Her work has been credited with preventing planned attacks.  Dr. Randazzo received a Ph.D. and Master’s degree from Princeton University in Social Psychology, and a B.A. from Williams College.  In 2005, Dr. Randazzo was awarded the Williams College Bicentennial Medal for her work in preventing violence.  She is co-author of two recent books, The Handbook for Campus Threat Assessment and Management Teams and Implementing Behavioral Threat Assessment on Campus: A Virginia Tech Demonstration Project.

 Phil Houston, CEO - QVerity, is a nationally recognized authority and expert on deception Phil Houstondetection, strategic interviewing and elicitation. His 25-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency was highlighted by his service as a senior member of the Office of Security. In that capacity he conducted thousands of interviews and interrogations for the CIA and other federal agencies, both as an investigator and as a polygraph examiner, and he’s credited with developing a detection of deception methodology currently employed throughout both the U.S. intelligence and Federal Law Enforcement communities. The scope of Phil’s work covered criminal activity, personnel security and key national security issues, including both counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism. The fact that many of his interviews were conducted in foreign countries, coupled with six years of residence overseas, has given him unique insight and extensive experience in dealing with foreign cultures, particularly in the Far East.  Phil introduced the detection of deception methodology to the corporate world with the co-founding of Business Intelligence Advisors, where he served as Executive Vice President and worked with the company’s largest clients in the U.S. and abroad. The story of his success in creating a commercial application and market for the detection of deception methodology is featured in the recently published book, Broker, Trader, Lawyer, Spy by Politico reporter Eamon Javers.  Phil holds a B.A. in Political Science degree from  East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

Major Gene Deisinger, Ph.D serves as Deputy Chief of Police Deisinger headshotand Director of Threat Management Services for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  Major Deisinger serves as executive office for the Virginia Tech Police Department, a nationally accredited law enforcement agency.  In addition to his command responsibilities with VTPD, Dr. Deisinger also manages the university’s threat assessment and management functions.  Dr. Deisinger earned his doctorate in counseling psychology from Iowa State University.  He is a licensed psychologist, a certified health service provider in psychology, and a certified peace officer. Dr. Deisinger was a founding member of the Iowa State University Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).  Dr. Deisinger served as the primary threat manager for Iowa State University from the team’s inception in 1994, until accepting his current position at Virginia Tech. Dr. Deisinger has personally managed and supervised threat cases and protective details for a broad range of governmental dignitaries, public figures, and members of the university community.  Dr. Deisinger is co-author of the recently released, Handbook for Campus Threat Assessment & Management Teams.  He serves as a subject matter expert and trainer for the Campus Threat Assessment Training initiative under a grant from the US Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.  Dr. Deisinger has served as the team leader for a multi-jurisdictional team of law enforcement officers who provide early intervention and crisis response to persons with mental illness.  He has provided basic and advanced training for hundreds of law enforcement officers regarding recognition of and response to mentally ill persons.  He has also served as the commander of a multi-agency Hostage/Crisis Negotiation team and has assisted in safely resolving numerous crisis situations.  Dr. Deisinger has taught numerous courses on hostage/crisis negotiation and served on instructor teams for courses offered through the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Dr. Deisinger provides operational support and training for several local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and has served as a Special Deputy United States Marshal with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. Dr. Deisinger volunteers with crisis support teams, providing individual and group support services following critical incidents.  He has responded on-scene to numerous local and national crisis situations to provide support for emergency services personnel or victims of trauma.

Masto headshotPaul E. Masto served for twenty five years as a special agent with the United States Secret Service.   He served on the Presidential Protective Division and the Vice Presidential Protective Division during the Administrations of Presidents Ronald Wilson Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush.   He implemented layered security systems for the protection of many Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates and he worked as the Detail Leader for numerous Heads of State who were visiting this country.   Mr. Masto has traveled extensively, both domestically and abroad, protecting the financial infrastructure of the U.S. Government and preserving the political process of the United States of America.   At the time of his retirement in January, 2007, Mr. Masto was supervising the full range of operations in the Las Vegas Field Office, which is one of the busiest districts for the Secret Service’s dual mission of Protection and Criminal Investigations.  He is considered to be a subject matter expert in physical and personal protection,  counterfeit  currency  and  documents,  identity  theft, bank fraud, credit card fraud, background investigations, cyber crimes, cellular  phone  fraud, money  laundering,  FinCEN  and  Bank  Secrecy  Act  (BSA) Regulations,  and  protective  intelligence  investigations. Mr. Masto has conducted security surveys at the White House, the Vice President’s Residence at the United States Naval Observatory, President Reagan’s Ranch in California, President Bush’s Compound in Maine and at Camp David.  In August, 2007, he founded Universal Security Specialists which provides a comprehensive, customized security analysis for companies that require a top-to-bottom, inside-out, vulnerability assessment and operational analysis of their security plan to include the following areas:   physical  security, employee  safety, executive  protection, audio  countermeasures, cyber  security, emergency  preparedness, crisis  management, disaster  recovery, business  continuity, operational  security (OPSEC), brand integrity, special  event  security, credentialing  and  logistics, fraud  prevention, regulatory  due  diligence, kidnap / ransom  policy, workplace / school  violence  prevention  with  active  shooter  policy.
