Perspectives on the Iran Sanctions Legislation

Conferees from the House and Senate are now in the process of ironing out the differences between their two versions of H.R. 2194, the “Comprehensive Iran Sanction, Accountability and Disinvestment Act of 2009,” with the goal of completing the job by May 28.   As the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fl) explained, it is time for Congress “to enact crippling, mandatory sanctions that address the rapidly growing threat posed by Iran.”

As with any major undertaking, a series of question swirl around the work of this conference.  One is: How hard will these sanctions hit U.S. and other non-Iranian firms and workers?   The major U.S. business groups, which support targeted sanctions, have expressed the concern that the current bills paint with too broad a brush.  The GBD colloquium on May 12 will focus on that issue and others related to the difficulty of crafting effective sanctions from one platform in the global economy.  Our speakers will be:

William Reinsch
National Foreign Trade Council

Catherine Robinson

Christopher Wenk
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
