Dominic Crossan has authored more than 20 books on the historical Jesus, four of which have become national religious best sellers. With colleague Marcus Borg, Dr. Crossan has written three widely popular books: "The Last Week: A Day by Day Account of Jesus's Final Week in Jerusalem" (2007); "The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth" (2008) and "The First Paul: Reclaiming the Radical Visionary Behind the Church's Conservative Icon" (2009). Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at DePaul University, Dr. Crossan has been interviewed on some 200 radio stations, including four times on NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross. He has also been interviewed on television networks such as ABC’s "PrimeTime," "Peter Jennings Reporting" and "Nightline;" CBS’ "Early Show" and "48 Hours," NBC’s "Dateline" and Fox News’ "The O’Reilly Factor," as well as on cable programs such as A&E, History, Discovery, and the National Geographic Channel.
Joerg Rieger represents a new generation of Progressive Christian theologians specializing in cutting-edge theology on Christian faith and public life, especially politics, economics and the misuse of power. A regular columnist for The Progressive Christian national magazine, his published books include “Remember the Poor: The Theological Challenge for the Twenty-First Century” (1998), "God and the Excluded: Visions and Blindspots in Contemporary Theology" (2001); "Christ and Empire: From Paul to Postcolonial Times" (2007); and his latest, “No Rising Tide: Theology, Economics, and the Future” (2009). He currently serves as Wendland-Cook Endowed Professor of Constructive Theology at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Like Dr. Crossan, Dr. Rieger has lectured internationally including appearances in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico.
Together Crossan and Rieger will challenge seminar participants to reject accepted notions of Christian faith and political life, and to struggle for an American society that replaces its "savage inequality" with citizens acting cooperatively to achieve common good outcomes.
