In addition to great open networking and inspiration, we're supporting a wonderful cause. Your registration for the event is a charitable contribution to SAFEHOME, offering support to survivors of domestic violence. Enjoy a wonderful sit down lunch provided by Bonefish Grill of Leawood while networking in the company of savvy Kansas City area business women. We will be joined by representatives of Safehome to learn how we can use our resources to immediately help women within our direct community struggling to change their lives for the better.
About SAFEHOME
It all began 30 years ago with a knock on a door and a compassionate woman who saw a need in her community. In 1980, founder Martha Hunt began a grassroots effort for a shelter in Johnson County. Meeting every Thursday night, this group of concerned citizens found that there was an unmet need, and it was great. As a result of these efforts, the Johnson County Association of Battered Persons was incorporated. Initially, the organization established a network of "safe homes" in private residents’ homes to provide safety and shelter to women and children fleeing domestic violence. Volunteers also took turns answering the crisis hotline when it was forwarded to their home phones.
In 1982, Martha and her small committee applied for and received a government grant, and used the funds for a down payment on a 118-year old house to be used as a shelter. In August of 1984, SAFEHOME shelter opened and was completely full the first night.
