Pastors For Family Values Day at the Capitol

Join The Family Foundation for our annual Pastors For Family Values Day at the Capitol.  This is a day for you to come to Richmond while the General Assembly is in session, receive updates and briefings from The Family Foundation staff, meet with you legislators and enjoy and complimentary lunch and inspiring speakers at The Family Foundation headquarters.

We are excited to announce that Martin Brown, the Commissioner of Social Services for Virginia will be the keynote speaker at our Pastors For Family Values Day at the Capitol on Thursday, February 3rd.   Martin previously served as the Executive Director for The Family Foundation and has a unique insight into the causes of poverty in 2011 and how the government can help fight the scourge of poverty today by addressing the root cause of poverty in our nation: the breakdown of the family.  His vision is to strengthen families with every client contact that is made through Social Services.  Martin recently presented similar information to the House Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee at the General Assembly.  “Excellent, a very inspiring presentation,” said Delegate Brenda Pogge, a member of that Committee.  You don’t want to miss this powerful presentation.

Also, please bring your youth pastor with you.  Justin McClure, Youth Pastor for Beaverdam Baptist Church will be sharing his vision and plan for networking with other Youth Pastors to impact our teens and their schools with the Gospel.

Pastors and ministry leaders will enjoy a time of fellowship and a complimentary lunch at The Family Foundation headquarters.  Lunch will include white chicken chili, sandwiches and dessert.

Thank you for your willingness to get involved in the cultural issues of our day.  We look forward to seeing many of you in Richmond on Thursday, February 3rd.

Commissioner Brown

Meet Martin Brown

Martin D. Brown will be the keynote speaker at our Pastors For Family Values Day at the Capitol.  He is the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), with vast leadership experience in human services, government relations and public affairs.  He once served as Executive Director of The Family Foundation.

Appointed by Governor Bob McDonnell in 2010 as head of one of the Commonwealth’s largest agencies, Commissioner Brown previously worked in state government, serving two former Virginia Governors in several capacities.

He was named Assistant Secretary within the Secretariat of Health and Human Services during the administration of Governor James Gilmore, as well as Policy Advisor. His knowledge and expertise were utilized as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Health and Human Resources under Governor George Allen.

Commissioner Brown is the former Director of Communications with VDSS, where he was responsible for the successful promotion of Virginia's historic welfare reform initiative, the Virginia Independence Program. Hisguidance during sweeping changes to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and the implementation of the Virginia Independence Program resulted in the Commonwealth’s mantle as a national model of welfare reform.

Earlier positions also include Vice President of Public Affairs at Johnson Inc., Virginia’s largest full-service African-American-owned marketing and public relations firm; President of the Providence Management Group, Inc.; and Executive Director and Director of Church and Community Outreach for The Family Foundation of Virginia.

Commissioner Brown is also an award-winning television and radio Executive Producer and a graduate of Howard University’s School of Business Administration, where he earned All-Conference honors in football, and was selected Captain of the 1984 and 1985 teams. He and his wife have two children and live in the Metro-Richmond area.
