Building Inspiration:
Newer "green" thinking from the ground up

Lily Zand and Oliver Schaper

Zand and Schaper at CEIE 5/19, 7pm

Join Oliver Schaper, Senior Associate and Senior Sustainability Strategist at Gensler, and Lily Zand,  architectural designer and founder of School of Jellyfish Thursday, May 19 at 7pm at the Center for Environmental Innovation and Education (CEIE) at Denning's Point in Beacon for insight and ideas about inspirational approaches to green building.

Two leaders in the world of sustainable architecture will present a new paradigm of building practices and thought designed to tread lightly on the planet. Oliver Schaper, responsible for the award-winning and sustainable design of CEIE, will share innovative strategies which have brought him to the forefront of the global sustainable design movement. Lily Zand, recognized internationally for her animated, mobile design and relentless promotion of environmental issues, will enlighten the evening  with a dual  approach of sustainable architect and inspired educator.

Oliver Schaper
Trained as an architect, Oliver frequently crosses the traditional boundaries of the
profession to turn every project into an opportunity to innovate and create lasting value,
be it in the development of low carbon residential housing prototypes, the facilitation of
high performance energy and water strategies for a large corporate campus, or as a
planning advisor on a 50,000-hectare seawater irrigated bio-fuel agricultural project.

In February 2010 Oliver became one of the very first LEED-Accredited Professionals for
Neighborhood Development. As senior associate with Gensler he leads the Sustainable
Design Performance Group for Gensler's Northeast region and is involved in numerous
projects ranging from a small environmental not-for-profit to large scale master plans in
the U.S. and the Middle East. His clients include The New York Times, Novartis,
McGraw-Hill, Morgan Stanley, Qatar Airways, New Nile Co., and The Beacon Institute
for Rivers and Estuaries.

Together with Lily Zand, Oliver is consultant for “School of Jellyfish”, an innovative model of providing
community access to sustainable planning and design in Beacon, NY.

Lily Zand
Lily Zand is an architectural designer, installation artist, and educator, having obtained her Bachelor of Architecture from Cooper Union and her Masters from Harvard University.

Prior to establishing Q-LLP, her New York based architectural firm in 2001, she had accumulated twelve
years of teaching and sixteen years of experience in the practice of architecture. Most recently she has founded School of Jellyfish, a Design House for the Advancement of Sustainable Living and Renewable Energy, in Beacon, New York.

She studies Jellyfish, amoebic structures and water as cognitive models and sustainable organizing
devices. Although sources of her inspirations, such as living systems and marine organizations, are not
traditionally associated with architecture, the results are undoubtedly architectural and pertinent.
Crazy Chicago (a television documentary program on oddities) had described her Studio as,
” …somewhere between Cirque de Soleil, and a spiritual epiphany.”
