UNWANTED TRADE:
A Look at Trade That Steals, Corrupts, and Destroys
A GBD Colloquium
Tuesday, April 5, 2011
The National Press Club
529 14th Street, NW,
Washington, DC
In her recent book Human Trafficking: a global perspective, Louise Shelley of George Mason University explains that illicit trade is often not the product of criminals alone but of a network of "legitimate" actors who help them. The picture below, which shows Al Capone's Pennsylvania prison cell, makes the same point.

The prohibition era gangster's understanding of what he did also has a contemporary ring, from the self-serving "All I do is supply a demand" to the unvarnished "I have built my organization upon fear." On the morning of April 5, GBD will look at today's Al Capones, who, aided by globalization, operate on every continent to steal, corrupt, and destroy with illicit trade in counterfeit medicines, smuggled cigarettes, and people bought and sold as prostituteds and child soldiers. And that barely scratches the surface.
