Hand Protection

Whole Glove Integrity and Chemical Resistance

ROBERT N. PHALEN, PhD , CIH

Please join us for our annual meeting with the Orange County Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.  This year's joint breakfast meeting will coincide with Saint Valentine's Day.  Read below for an interesting link between the holiday and hand protection........

The legend of Saint Valentine stems the historical story of St Valentine who was persecuted by Roman Emperor Claudius II.   Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.  Saint Valentine, on the eve of his sentence, wrote a card addressed to the young girl with a note that began; "From your Valentine"

Saint Valentine used his talented hands to craft a communication that changed the life of a small girl and to this day, the world!.  Workers we protect also need to use their talented hands to produce the products and services that keep the wheels of commerce turning.

Our role as EH&S practitioners is to protect those workers by recommending the best possible hand protection available.  The speaker for our meeting is Robert N. Phalen, PhD, CIH.
Dr. Phalen is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and holds a doctorate in environmental health sciences from UCLA.

Dr. Phalen will be presenting the results of his NIOSH-funded research on the impacts of movement on whole glove integrity and chemical resistance.  The research has uncovered new measures associated with glove quality that can aid in the glove selection process.  In addition, key issues with the current water-leak tests for disposable glove products will be discussed.  The ultimate goal of NIOSH and the ongoing research in this area is to one day develop certification standards for chemical protective gloves and clothing, similar to those developed for respiratory protection.  Health and safety professionals should be confident in the choices they make regarding chemical protective clothing.

Charles Sandberg Memorial

Joint Breakfast Meeting

At the annual joint breakfast meeting in 2003, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was drafted and signed by the presidents and president-elects of both organizations. The MOU was intended to demonstrate a commitment by each organization to work together and pool resources when pursuing common goals. Charles Sandberg was an original signatory of the MOU as president of OCAIHA at the time.

Charles passed away in 2008.  Several years ago, both organizations decided to dedicate the joint meeting to Mr. Sandberg's memory.  Charles was a member of both organizations, and recognized the benefit of both organizations

working in concert to promote professionalism in our respective fields.
