Active Metabolic Fitness Testing

Available during the 10th Annual Heart Zones CONFERENCE
2 Days: Saturday, November 5th and Sunday, November 6th
Club ZUM Fitness
In the heart of downtown Seattle, Washington

The Active Metabolic Assessment identifies your anaerobic ventilatory threshold, which represents the level of work and fat-burning efficiency your body can sustain over time.  To acheive your body's full potential, you need to know what that potential is.  How much oxygen can your body take in and put to use in the process of burning fuel (calories) to perform at your highest level or be at your best optimal fitness level.

Through a 10 - 15 minute exercise assessment on a bike or treadmill (your choice), O2 uptake and CO2 production are both measured to precisely determine how well your "metabolic engine" is tuned and aids in determining your type of fuel consumption - the amount of fats and carbohydrates you burn. This is one of the most comprehensive physiologic assessments we will have to offer.  It will provide to you insight into the performance of the aerobic system by evaluating cardiorespiratory and metabolic function.

With the information received from your assessment, we will be able to provide to you valuable information:

  • How efficient your metabolism is just by breathing
  • Individualized threshold heart rate training zones
  • Information on your how aerobically efficient you are
  • Ventilatory threshold numbers
  • Accurate measurement of your Peak and/or Threshold VO2
  • How precisely your body performs during exercise activity and during training
  • Monitor how your body is adapting to your individualized training plan

Your metabolic assessment specialist will ensure all safety and comfort during your assessment. We follow and adhere to all safety guidelines through the American College of Medicine and American Heart Association for testing protocols.  You will be able to ask any questions regarding your assessment and the procedure.

  • A comfortable breathing mask will be placed over your mouth and nose during the assessment.  You will need to breathe through your mouth only through tubes attached to the face mask.  These tubes are connected to a sensor which will analyze the air that is exhaled while you exercise.
  • Your assessment will begin with you walking or pedaling at a predetermined speed or cadence.
  • Exercise workload will increase with each 1-minute stage through speed, incline or resistance.
  • You will monitored closely during the assessment process, while data is monitored and collected on heart rate, RQ - ventilatory input/output, and RPE - rating of perceived exertion.
  • Your overall assessment time will only take approximately 10 - 15 minutes.  At the end of your assessment, workload will be decreased, returning you to a recovery period, allowing adequate time for heart rate recovery.
